Art: The Genius of Jean-Michel Basquiat

by DG

I’ve never connected with a piece of art in the form of a still visual until I discovered Basquiat’s work. The simplistic complexity of each piece somehow captured everything he was thinking. Like most rappers, he connected with the artists that came before him and used them as a muse to re-create or re-invent what they did before. Many of you may recognize his name from the numerous times Jay-Z has mentioned him throughout his career. He overdosed on heroin at the young age of 27, but left over 1,000 drawings and 1,000 paintings; and has since become one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Basquiat inspired Jay-Z to record the song “Most Kingz” which basically draws his connection to Basquiat and his life through their success. Check below for the song, some Basquiat quotes and paintings.

Jay-Z ft. Chris Martin – Most Kingz | Grammy Family Freestyle

Inspired by Basquiat, my chariot’s on fire
Everybody took shots, hit my body up, I’m tired
Build me up, break me down to build me up again
They like “Hov we need you back so we can kill your ass again”
Hov got flow though he’s no Big and Pac, but he’s close
How I’m ‘posed to win? They got me fighting ghosts
Most kings get their heads cut off
With the same sword they knight you they gon’ good night you with
Shit, that’s only half if they like you
That ain’t even the half what they might do
Don’t believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
See Biggie, see Pac
See success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas
See Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it’s a suicide
When you succeed, prepare to be crucified
Media meddles, niggas sue you, you settle
Every step you take, they remind you you ghetto
So it’s tough being Bobby Brown
To be Bobby then, you gotta be Bobby now
Now the question is, “Is to have had and lost
Better than not having at all?”

This is a song for the genius child.
Sing it softly, for the song is wild.
Sing it softly as ever you can -
Lest the song get out of hand.

Nobody loves a genius child.

Can you love an eagle,
Tame or wild?
Can you love an eagle,
Wild or tame?
Can you love a monster
Of frightening name?

Nobody loves a genius child.

Kill him – and let his soul run wild.

-Langston Hughes

Art: Image of Steve Jobs Created Using Tweets

by DG

This might be one of the dopest pieces of art I’ve seen in a while. This was created using the tweets that mentioned his name yesterday after he passed. It’s good to know that we still appreciate people who have moved our generation forward. To enlarge the image and see the tweets, right click and view image. If that doesn’t work then try this link.

Art: Inspirational & Motivational Quotes

by DG

Sometimes we all need a quote to remind us what we’re here for. I remember watching a special on Kenyan runners before the 96′ Olympics with my father… Moses Kiptanui, who held the 3000m steeplechase world record at the time said, “Push your body, don’t allow your body to push you.” After hearing that is resonated with me and I have lived by it ever since. Below are a few quotes expressed through art to help you get through some points in your life.

Artwork: Drake – Take Care

by DG

Feels like it’s been so long. Is life moving so fast in this generation that when we desire something it begins to move in slow motion? Are we just used to getting what we want right away? Or do we require one another to feel right about all that is going on around us? Maybe our anticipation is justified by the fact that we genuinely cannot wait to share a moment again? Either way, your life and mine are scheduled to meet on October 24…I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

See you soon.

Book Cover: T.I. – Power & Beauty

by DG

Hip-hop artist Tip “T.I.” Harris has received every acclaim the music world has to offer. Now, working with bestselling celebrity collaborator David Ritz, T.I. applies all his talent and experience to the world of fiction by creating the epic love story of Power and Beauty.

After the death of his mother, Charlotte, Paul “Power” Clay allows himself to be guided by Slim, a local businessman. Slim always has the best of everything, and Power is sure that if he learns Slim’s ways, he’ll make something of himself–and perhaps be worthy of Tanya “Beauty” Long. From Chicago to Miami to New York, through drugs, women, and violence, Power makes the difficult transition from boy to man and, in doing so, begins to question if those who have taught him–including Slim–truly have his best interests at heart.

Beauty has always known that the only person she can rely on is herself. After her mother died when she was eleven years old, she was adopted by close family friend Charlotte Clay. But with Charlotte’s death, Beauty knows she’s no longer safe and protected–especially as Power gets sucked into a new kind of life. As soon as she can, she turns her back on Atlanta–and the growing love she feels for Power–for a chance to make it in the Big Apple. With a successful fashion career on the horizon, Beauty takes New York by storm with her wit, business savvy, and breathtaking good looks. But she’s never forgotten those she left behind. And when it becomes clear that Power needs her, Beauty will risk everything to save the man she loves.

It goes along with the theme of WTT which is simplicity but I’m not a big fan of them. Although, I do feel like the videos will be cray!
