The House On Sunday: Call Your Loved Ones To Tell Them You Love Them

by DG

The worst feeling in the world is receiving a phone call and hearing someone has passed. The second worse feeling is knowing that you could’ve easily called or seen that same person yesterday. Don’t take your time on this earth for granted for tomorrow is not promised. No amount of money, parties, clothes, cars, drugs, sports events, etc; can equate to the life of a loved one. One love.

It’s that day of the week again. It’s time to drive home halfway drunk, hop in the shower, make it to church late and sit in the back row hoping the preacher doesn’t mention you. It’s also the day to call your loved ones if you haven’t. Tell the people you love that you love them… they might need to hear it.

Our cousins and uncles in the basement up at "The House"

Sometimes I catch myself acting like I can sing as I tap the wheel and nod my head like my father does every time he drives. There isn’t anything wrong with doing that until you turn your head and realize everyone in the car next to you is laughing. It’s Sunday so if you woke up listening to rap your dreams will never come true. Call your aunts, uncles, parents, siblings and cousins today… life isn’t short when you’re broke but you might hit the lottery tomorrow.

Earth Wind and Fire – September

Frankie Beverly and Maze – Before I Let Go

Jr. Walker and The All Stars – Shotgun

Stevie Wonder – Superstition

The Marvelettes – Please Mr. Postman

Waves with part of the female side of the 15th Story.

Sometimes we get caught up in the troubles of the world and forget the things that really matter. The people that love you and their health should always be the most important thing. The majority of the time we don’t realize that until it’s too late, so on this Sunday take time out of your day to call your loved ones or go see them. You never know when you’re going to get that phone call telling you someone is gone. Much love to my family, the people who support us and the 15th Story.

Al Green – Hangin’ On

Dustin Gibson ft. Veelo – Pushin’ On (Prod. Justyn Waves)

Luther Vandross – Never Too Much

Mariah Carey – Bye Bye

The Jackson 5 – I’ll Be There

Cousins together in St. Louis.

My father used to say, “they don’t make music like they used to” and I dismissed him by turning Master P back up. Looking back, I now realize that my favorite rap is inspired by that soul feeling from back then. Thank you dad, 9th Wonder, Kanye, Just Blaze, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Dilla.

Curtis Mayfield – Give Me Your Love (Love Song)

Tom Brock – I Love You More And More

Willie Hutch – Aint That Mellow Mellow

Cousins outside The House probably up to no good.

You see those 3 guys up there? They were probably talking about something they had no business doing, but that’s what usually happened when the street lights came on. As I get older, I cherish and appreciate the times we had up at The House. I’ve also realized that the music we listen to today was inspired by everything we heard then. So in my effort to stay grounded, we put together another Sunday playlist of the music we grew up on. Call some of your family members and reminisce on the old times… it’s good for the soul.

David Ruffin – Common Man

Lamont Dozier – Joy

Mtume – Juicy Fruit

Vernon Burch – Joy & Pain

Willie Hutch – Love Me Back

The House On Sunday: Charles Bradley, Curtis Mayfield, OJay’s, Sade & The Temptations

Our aunts and uncles playing poker up at The House.

Growing up, I always looked forward to Sunday. It was the day my family got together after church and went up to ‘The House’ to play poker, watch football, argue, eat dinner and listen to music. This tradition was the staple of my family and the reason that we stayed so close. Being that this blog was started by myself and my cousin, we wanted to do something to represent where we came from. So we present to you: The House On Sunday. Every Sunday we’ll put together a playlist consisting of some old and new soulful classics. For the first installment we have some of my father’s favorites including The O’Jay’s and Temptations.

Charles Bradley – The World (Is Going Up In Flames)

Curtis Mayfield – The Makings Of You

O’Jay’s – Family Reunion

Sade – Your Love Is King

The Temptations – Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)
